Dr. Joseph B. Wilson

Dr. Joseph Wilson is a board-certified and fellowship-trained physician specializing in the shoulder. His extensive surgical training in both the shoulder and sports medicine enables Dr. Wilson to address a wide variety of orthopedic conditions, injuries, and disorders.

And, as former Academic All-American and team captain of both the University of Virginia and the Gold Medal winning USA World Lacrosse Teams, he knows about the value and importance of returning athletes and active people to the activities they enjoy—safely and effectively.

Educational Background, Certifications, and Expertise

Dr. Wilson graduated from the University of Virginia before earning his medical degree from the University of Maryland School of Medicine. Following, he served as a flight surgeon in the United States Navy, as a key member of an F-18 Fighter Attack Squadron, and was stationed on the USS Constellation aircraft carrier.

After completing his orthopedic training at Duke Medical Center in Durham, North Carolina, Dr. Wilson spent an additional 18 months of subspecialty training in sports medicine and shoulder surgery. During his time working toward a sports medicine fellowship at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, Dr. Wilson served as assistant team physician for DePaul University and its Division I Men’s and Women’s basketball teams. He was also an assistant team physician for the Chicago White Sox and the Chicago Bulls.

Under the leadership of Dr. Laurent Lafosse, Dr. Wilson received the Alps Surgery Institute International Shoulder Fellowship in Annecy, France. He is only one of three Americans to have been selected among 44 fellows in the history of the Institute.

His unique and extended educational background and training allow Dr. Wilson to address a number of shoulder problems affecting the joint capsule, muscle, and tendon (in addition to other soft tissues) which include:

  • Frozen shoulder
  • Shoulder pain
  • Shoulder impingement/bursitis
  • Shoulder instability
  • Biceps tendon problems
  • Shoulder fracture
  • Shoulder arthritis
  • Rotator cuff tendinitis
  • Rotator cuff tear

As a result of his specialized training in arthroscopic and open shoulder surgical approaches, Dr. Wilson routinely performs the following procedures:

  • Shoulder arthroscopy
  • Knee arthroscopy
  • Shoulder reconstruction
  • Knee reconstruction
