What Is Plastic Surgery?

Plastic surgery involves reconstructing, repairing, or replacing physical. Plastic surgery includes reconstructive procedures to help repair or rebuild features caused by a congenital or developmental abnormality or an injury, accident, or illness.

It also includes cosmetic surgery, elective procedures people choose to enhance their appearance. Some people choose cosmetic surgery simply because they want to look a different way. Others opt for a cosmetic procedure to improve their appearance after an injury, even if they do not need the surgery to improve function or health.

Procedures can be extensive or minimally-invasive depending on patient need. Some of the least invasive procedures are cosmetic and include Botox injections, dermabrasion, laser skin resurfacing, and soft tissue fillers.

Plastic Surgery Statistics

According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, 15.6 million cosmetic procedures were performed in 2020. This includes 13.2 million minimally-invasive procedures. The top five cosmetic procedures that year were:

  • Nose reshaping
  • Eyelid surgery
  • Facelift
  • Liposuction
  • Breast augmentation

The most common reconstructive procedures plastic surgeons performed in 2020 were tumor removal, laceration repair, maxillofacial surgery, scar revision, and hand surgery.

Some of the procedures that are becoming more common are breast lift, buttock lift, cheek implant, chin augmentation, and lower body lift.

Who Needs Plastic Surgery?

Plastic surgery isn’t all about appearance. Some people need reconstructive procedures to restore function. Candidates for this type of surgery include people who have tissue defects as a result of:

  • Physical trauma
  • Congenital abnormalities
  • Developmental abnormalities
  • Tumors
  • Infections
  • Scars and burns

Reconstructive plastic surgery helps people with these issues enjoy restored function and also improve appearance.

Cosmetic plastic surgery is for anyone who wants to make aesthetic changes. Cosmetic surgeons reshape or reconstruct features and tissues to improve appearance. Women account for the majority of cosmetic procedures, but men are increasingly turning to plastic surgery to improve their appearance.
