General surgeons are required to possess knowledge of and responsibility for the preoperative, operative, and postoperative management of patients with a broad spectrum of diseases, including those that may require elective or emergency surgical treatment.
At our North Carolina acute care hospital, we staff a team of surgeons with experience performing a wide variety of general procedures.
Our surgical team includes gastroenterologists, endocrine surgeons, and others qualified to provide procedures involving the breast, endocrine system, gastrointestinal tract, colon, liver, pancreas, and rectum.
The general surgeons who operate at North Carolina Specialty Hospital perform laparoscopic procedures to treat a variety of medical conditions, such as hernia repairs, appendix and gallbladder removal, and procedures involving the colon. This minimally invasive (MIS) approach allows surgery to be performed through small incisions utilizing cameras to visualize the inside of the abdomen. At NCSH, our general surgeons may utilize a “mini laparoscopic” approach when appropriate. A “Mini Lap” allows for less invasive incisions, using smaller-diameter cameras and instruments, than traditional laparoscopic surgeries.
The advantages of laparoscopic surgery for patients include less postoperative pain, quicker recovery periods, less risk of bleeding, and lower risk of infection.
Breast surgery performed at NCSH includes treatment of benign and malignant breast disease. Those procedures include biopsies, breast conservation and oncoplastic surgery, mastectomies, and sentinel lymph node biopsies.
