North Carolina Specialty Hospital Awarded Advanced Total Hip and Knee Replacement Certification from The Joint Commission

North Carolina Specialty Hospital has earned The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval® for Advanced Total Hip and Knee Replacement Certification by demonstrating continuous compliance with its performance standards. The Gold Seal is a symbol of quality that reflects a health care organization’s commitment to providing safe and quality patient care.

A gold circle that reads “The Joint Commission National Quality Approval.”

The certification, offered in collaboration with the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, focuses on the presurgical orthopedic consultation to the intraoperative, hospitalization or ambulatory surgical center admission, rehabilitation activities, and follow-up visit with the orthopedic surgeon.

North Carolina Specialty Hospital underwent a rigorous, announced onsite review on October 18-19, 2022. During the visit, a Joint Commission reviewer evaluated compliance with related certification standards and assessed the organization’s use of evidence-based clinical practice guidelines and continuous performance improvement strategies. Joint Commission standards are developed in consultation with health care experts and providers, measurement experts, and patients. The reviewer also conducted onsite observations and interviews.

“Advanced Total Hip and Knee Replacement Certification recognizes health care organizations committed to fostering continuous quality improvement in patient safety and quality of care,” says Mark Pelletier, RN, MS, chief operating officer, Accreditation and Certification Operations, and chief nursing executive, The Joint Commission. “We commend North Carolina Specialty Hospital for using certification to reduce variation in its clinical processes and to strengthen its program structure and management framework for orthopedic patients.”

Obtaining this certification displays the hospital’s solid organizational framework that promotes and exemplifies excellence.

North Carolina Specialty Hospital prepared extensively for the certification process to ensure specific eligibility requirements were met at the time of the onsite review. This included following an established timeline, becoming familiar with the standards, and developing and implementing a plan to achieve full compliance.
