Dr. Burns is a graduate of Davidson College and the Wake Forest University School of Medicine. He completed his residency in general surgery at the University of North Carolina Hospitals.
Dr. Burns is board certified by the American Board of Surgery and is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He worked as a general surgeon at Regional Surgical Associates in Durham and Chapel Hill, NC for 12 years. His current clinical interests are in wound care, hyperbaric medicine, and venous disease.
He has served as president of the North Carolina Surgical Association, president of Regional Surgical Associates, medical director for Novant Health, secretary and treasurer of Durham Regional Hospital, chairman of the Surgical Care Improvement Project at DRH, clinical professor of surgery at UNC, and as a volunteer surgeon in Kenya. His honors include Chief Resident of the Year, Duke teamwork award for the Surgical Care Improvement Project, and induction into the Chapel Hill High School Sports Hall of Fame.
He lives in Chapel Hill with his wife and two children.
He has been in practice since 2000.
