Dr. Shadduck graduated with a BS in Biomedical Sciences from the University of California, Riverside, with Honors and Phi Beta Kappa. He earned his medical degree from UCLA, Summa Cum Laude. He completed his internship and residency in general surgery, with a two-year research fellowship in immunology and virology, at Duke University Medical Center.
Since completing his training at Duke, Dr. Shadduck has served the Durham and surrounding communities as a minimally invasive GI, hernia, and general surgeon since 1993. He has held multiple leadership roles at Duke Regional Hospital, Davis Ambulatory Surgery Center, and NC Specialty Hospital, including General Surgery Division Chief, Department of Surgery Vice-Chair, and Medical Executive Committee Member at all three institutions.
Dr. Shadduck has more than 50 publications and book chapters, and he is Editor of the SAGES Manual Ethics of Surgical Innovation. He has served as instructor to surgery residents, medical students, FNP students, PA students, and MSN students from Duke, UNC Chapel Hill, Campbell, Lenoir-Rhyne, and UNC Pembroke. He is diplomat of the American Board of Surgery, Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, and member of numerous professional societies. He is Doctor Honoris Causa at the University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Timisoara, Romania. He is editorial reviewer for Surgical Endoscopy, Journal of the American College of Surgeons, Journal of the Society of Laparoscopic and Robotic Surgeons, International Journal of Medical Robotics and Computer Assisted Surgery, and Hernia.
Dr. Shadduck also remains committed to global healthcare. He has led both academic medical teams and medical mission teams to multiple continents for more than 20 years.
Dr. Shadduck will be joining the NCSH leadership team as General Surgery Medical Director.
